David La Rue of Longueuil, Quebec won a gold medal for Canada on Friday at the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York. The Laval University student placed first in the men’s mass start. He previously won the bronze medal in the men’s 1000 metres on Sunday, and the bronze medal in the men’s team pursuit on Wednesday.
La Rue was in fact one of two Canadians to win a medal in the men’s mass start event. Hubert Marcotte of Port-Rouge, Quebec won the bronze medal. This was the second medal for Marcotte, as he was part of the Canadian team alongside La Rue that won the bronze medal in the men’s team pursuit. In the men’s mass start on Friday, Daniele Di Stefano of Italy won the silver medal.
In men’s curling, Canada beat Switzerland 3-2 to win bronze. The Canadian team was skipped by Owen Purcell of Halifax, Nova Scotia, who attends Dalhousie University.
In women’s hockey, Canada will play for gold on Saturday against Japan after defeating Slovakia 6-1 in the semifinal. Audrey-Anne Veillette of Drummondville, Quebec had a multi-point game. The University of Montreal product had one goal and one assist for two points. The other five Canadian goal scorers were University of Saskatchewan defenseman Isabella Pozzi of Calgary, Alberta, Concordia University forward and Team Canada captain Emmy Fecteau of Saint-Odilon-de-Cranbourne, Quebec, University of Waterloo defenseman Carley Bosse-Olivier of Sudbury, Ontario, University of Waterloo forward Leah Herrfort of Palmerston, Ontario, and Nipissing University forward Maria Dominico of North Bay, Ontario.
