Team Canada continued to do well at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal on Thursday. Canadian swimmers won three medals–one gold, one silver and one bronze.
The gold and bronze medal came in the same event–the women’s 50 metre butterfly in the S7 classification. There you could find Danielle Dorris of Fredericton, New Brunswick finish in first place with a time of 34.01 seconds, a championship record. Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ontario meanwhile won the bronze medal with a time of 35.40 seconds.
Dorris, who has underdeveloped arms, reached the podium by 2.67 seconds. Routliffe, who suffers from hypochondroplasia, won the bronze medal by 1.28 seconds. Nikita Howarth of New Zealand finished in fourth place with a time of 36.68 seconds. Giulia Terzi of Italy won the silver medal with a time of 34.83 seconds.
The other Canadian medal was by Nicholas Bennett of Parksville, British Columbia in the men’s 200 metre individual medley in the SM14 classification. Bennett, who suffers from autism, posted a second place time of 2:10.23 and reached the podium by 3.34 seconds over Joao Pedro Brutos de Oliveira of Brazil, who had a fourth place time of 2:13.57. Fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bandeira won the gold medal with a world record time of 2:07.50. Dmytro Vanzenko of the Ukraine won the bronze medal with a time of 2:12.78.
Canada now has won 13 medals. They have won five gold medals. four silver medals, and four bronze medals.
