
Courtney Lee Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick won two medals this past weekend at a World Cup short track speed skating event in Dresden, Germany. Sarault won the bronze medal on Saturday in the women’s 1500 metres, and then teamed up with Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Rikki Doak of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Renee Marie Steenge of Montreal, Quebec to win a silver medal in the women’s 3000 metre relay on Sunday. Team Canada won a third medal as Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke won bronze in the men’s 1000 metre event on Saturday. Boutin won her Olympic silver medal in the women’s 1000 metres at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
In the women’s 1500 metres, Sarault had a time of 2:26.591. Minjeong Choi of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:26.536. Kristen Santos-Griswold of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:26.570. Sarault earned a medal by .211 seconds over Boutin, who had a fourth place time of 2:29.802. In the World Cup women’s 1500 metre World Cup short track speed skating standings, Sarault is in second with 332 points. Gilli Kim of South Korea is the World Cup leader with 444 points.
In the women’s 3000 metre relay, Canada had a second place time of 4:07.768. The Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 4:07.531. South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 4:08.238. Canada reached the podium by 1.221 seconds over China, which had a fourth place time of 4:08.989. In the World Cup women’s 3000 metre relay standings, Canada is in a first place tie with the Netherlands and South Korea, as each country have 340 points.
In the men’s 1000 metres, Roussel had a time of 1:25.016. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:23.231. Roberts Kruzbergs of Latvia won the silver medal with a time of 1:23.330. Roussel reached the podium by 35.244 seconds over Tae Sung Kim of South Korea, who had a fourth place time of 2:00.260. In the World Cup men’s 1000 metre standings, Roussel is in 18th place with 70 points. It was the first World Cup individual medal of his career. Park leads with 388 points. The medals for Roussel, Sarault, Boutin, Doak and Steenge will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
