Canada wins three medals in cross country skiing at 2022 Paralympic Winter Games

Team Canada came away with three medals in cross country skiing on Tuesday evening in Canada (Wednesday in Beijing) at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. Brian McKeever of Calgary, Alberta won the gold medal in the men’s sprint for athletes with a visual disability. Natalie Wilkie of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, who only has one finger on one hand due to an industrial arts accident in school, won the gold medal in the women’s standing division. Collin Cameron of Bracebridge, Ontario, who has arthrogryposis, won the bronze medal in the men’s sprint sitting division.

McKeever posted a time in the final of 3:19.5. Jake Adicoff of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 3:20.3. Zebastian Modin of Sweden won the bronze medal with a time of 3:37.8. McKeever reached the podium by 26.7 seconds over Anthony Chalencon of France, who had a fourth place time of 3:47.2. For McKeever, it was his 15th Paralympic Winter Games gold medal in his career.

Wilkie posted a time in the final of 4:05.1. Vilde Nilsen of Norway won the silver medal with a time of 4:08.1. Sydney Peterson of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 4:12.1. Wilkie earned a medal by 16.4 seconds over Zhiqing Zao of China, who was in fourth place with a time of 4:21.5. For Wilkie, it was her third career Paralympic Winter Games gold medal as she previously won gold in the women’s 7.5 kilometre classical standing division at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and in the women’s 15 kilometre classical standing division at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Cameron posted a time of 2:46.3. Peng Zheng of China won the gold medal with a time of 2:42.4. Zhongwu Mao of China won the silver medal with a time of 2:44.9. Cameron won the bronze medal by 9.1 seconds over Zixu Liu of China, who had a fourth place time of 2:55.4.

In wheelchair curling, Canada won twice to improve to a record of six wins and three losses. They came from behind to beat Great Britain 6-3, and then beat Estonia 9-3.

In the medal standings, Canada is in third place with 16 medals (seven gold medals, two silver medals, and seven bronze medals). China leads with 31 medals and Ukraine is second with 19 medals.
