Canada wins gold in women’s team rhythmic gymnastics at Commonwealth Games

Team Canada won its 17th gold medal on Thursday at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. This time Canada placed first in the women’s rhythmic gymnastics team all-around event.

The Canadian team comprised of Tatiana Cocsanova and Suzanna Shahbazian of Montreal, Quebec, and Carmel Kallemaa of Thornhill, Ontario. Cocsanova, Shahbazian and Kallemaa posted a total score of 272.95 points. Australia won the silver medal with 268.65 points. England won the bronze medal with 267.05 points, Canada earned a medal by 7.7 points over Malaysia, which finished in fourth place with a score of 265.25 points.

This was the fourth time Canada won the gold medal in the women’s rhythmic gymnastics team all-around event at the Commonwealth Games. They previously placed first at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Team Canada won a second medal on Thursday. In the women’s 10 metre platform diving, Caeli McKay of Calgary, Alberta posted a third place score of 317.5 points. Andrea Spendolini-Sireix of England won the gold medal with a score of 357.5 points. Lois Toulson of England won the silver medal with a score of 337.3 points.

Canada remains in third place in the overall medal standings with 59 medals (17 gold medals, 20 silver medals and 22 bronze medals). Australia leads with 133 medals and England is in second with 119 medals.
