Amar Dhesi wins wrestling gold for Canada at 2022 Commonwealth Games

Amar Dhesi of Surrey, British Columbia is a Canadian Commonwealth Games gold medalist. On Friday, Dhesi won the gold medal in the men’s 125 kilogram freestyle wrestling division.

Dhesi’s Commonwealth Games gold goes along with his World Junior Championship gold medal in Zagreb, Croatia in 2014 and his Pan American Wrestling Championship gold medal in Acapulco, Mexico in 2022. In Birmingham, Dhesi beat Aaron Johnson of Jamaica 10-0 in the quarterfinals, Mohit Grewal 12-2 in the semifinals, and silver medalist Zaman Anwar of Pakistan 9-2 in the gold medal match. Mandhir Kooner of England and Grewal each won bronze.

Team Canada won a second gold medal on Friday. Mia Vallee of Beaconsfield, Quebec won the gold medal in the women’s 1m springboard diving event with a score of 291.85 points. Brittany O’Brien of Australia won the silver medal with a score of 279.6 points and Amy Rollinson of England won the bronze medal with a score of 272 points.

Also on Friday, Team Canada won three silver medals and two bronze medals, all in wrestling. Lachlan McNeil of Toronto placed second in the men’s 65 kilogram freestyle, Linda Morais of Tecumseh, Ontario was second in the women’s 68 kilogram freestyle, and Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Coquitlam, British Columbia was second in the women’s 62 kilogram freestyle. The bronze medals came from Hannah Taylor of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (women’s 57 kilogram freestyle) and Alex Moore of Montreal, Quebec (men’s 86 kilogram freestyle).

Canada now has won 67 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (19 gold, 24 silver and 24 bronze), and is third overall. Australia leads with 140 medals and England is second with 131 medals.
