Canadian Olympic silver medalist Angela Bailey dies at age 59

According to the Canadian Press, Canadian Olympic silver medalist Angela Bailey of Toronto, Ontario passed away on Sunday at the age of 59 of cancer. Bailey won a silver medal in the women’s 4×100 metre relay at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Bailey won a silver medal alongside Marita Payne of Toronto, Angella Taylor-Issajenko of Toronto, and France Gareau of Verner, Ontario. The Canadian team had a time in the final of 42.77 seconds. The United States won the gold medal with a time of 41.65 seconds. Great Britain won the bronze medal with a time of 43.11 seconds. Canada reached the podium by 0.38 seconds over France, which finished in fourth place with a time of 43.15 seconds.

Bailey was also a three-time silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games. She was part of the Canadian women’s 4×100 metre relay teams that won the silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, and the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Bailey also has the Canadian record in the women’s 100 metres. She posted a time of 10.98 seconds in Budapest, Hungary on July 6, 1987. Remarkably that record has continued to this day and has never been broken. Bailey also won a bronze medal in the women’s 60 metres at the 1987 World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis.
