Canada wins first game in 2022 Olympic men’s hockey tournament

Team Canada has won its first game in the Olympic men’s hockey tournament of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Thursday, Canada trounced Germany 5-1 in Group A action.

The Canadian team was led in scoring by Ben Street of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Kent Johnson of Port Moody, British Columbia, and Eric O’Dell of Ottawa, Ontario. Street had one goal and one assist for two points, while O’Dell and Johnson had two assists each. The other four Canadian goal scorers were Maxim Noreau of Montreal, Quebec, Jordan Weal of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Alex Grant of Antigionish, Nova Scotia, and Daniel Winnik of Toronto, Ontario. Noreau won a bronze medal for Canada in men’s hockey at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Canada next plays the United States Saturday at 9 pm MT.

in other Canadian Olympic men’s hockey news, Claude Julien of Blind River, Ontario, will reassume head coaching duties after breaking his ribs during practice in Switzerland leading up to the Olympic men’s hockey tournament. Meanwhile, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Martin St. Louis of Laval, Quebec has been named the interim head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. He takes over from Dominique Ducharme, who was fired on Wednesday. St. Louis won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

St. Louis is one of two Canadians to be named a NHL head coach this week. He is joined by Jay Woodcroft of Toronto, Ontario, who was named the Edmonton Oilers new head coach on Thursday. Woodcroft replaces Dave Tippett.

The Oilers have been struggling offensively and defensively this week. On Tuesday,  Laurent Brossoit of Port Alberni, British Columbia collected his third NHL shutout as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0.
