Canada pounds Sweden 11-0 in quarterfinals of Olympic women’s hockey tournament

Team Canada is in the semifinals of the 2002 Olympic women’s hockey tournament from Beijing, China. On Friday, Canada clobbered Sweden 11-0 in the second of four quarterfinals.

The Canadian team was led by Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario and Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, who had four assists each. Two Canadians had hat tricks as Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ontario, and Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario each scored thrice. Another Canadian player with a three-point game was Claire Thompson of Toronto, Ontario, who had three assists.

Three Canadians notched one goal and one assist for two points. They were Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario, Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario, and Jamie Lee Rattray of Ottawa, Ontario. Meanwhile, Renata Fast of Hamilton, Ontario and Micah Zandee-Hart of Saanichton, British Columbia also had a multi-point game as they each had two assists. The other two Canadian goal scorers were Emily Clark of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, Emerance Maschmeyer of Bruderheim, Alberta made 11 saves for the shutout.

In the other quarterfinal, the United States beat the Czech Republic 4-1. Two more quarterfinal games will take place on day nine. At 9 pm MT on Friday evening, the Russian Olympic Committee will play Switzerland, Then at 1:40 am MT on Saturday, Finland will play Japan.
