Team Canada won their third medal on Tuesday at the 2023 World Alpine Skiing Championships in Courchevel and Meribel, France. In the mixed team event in Meribel, the Canadian team comprised of Valerie Grenier of Ottawa, Ontario, Erik Read of Calgary, Alberta, Jeff Read of Calgary, Alberta, and Britt Richardson of Canmore, Alberta won the bronze medal.
Team Canada placed behind the gold medalists from the United States and the silver medalists from Norway. Canada beat Slovenia 4-0 in the round of 16, and then upset Switzerland in the quarterfinals. In the matchup against Switzerland each nation won two races. However, Canada advanced because they won the tie-breaker. The top time for each gender was used with Canada having a time of 44.84 seconds, and Switzerland having a time of 45.25 seconds. In the semifinals, Canada lost 3-1 to the United States. Then in the small final, Canada beat Austria. Both teams won two races each, with Canada once again coming out on top in the tie-breaker. The combined Canadian time (fastest skier for each gender) was 45.3 seconds, and the Austrian time (fastest skier for each gender) was 45.97 seconds.
The first two Canadian medals at the 2023 World Alpine Skiing Championships came in the men’s speed events. Jack Crawford of Toronto, Ontario won gold in the men’s super giant slalom and Cameron Alexander of North Vancouver, British Columbia won bronze in the men’s downhill.
