The Toronto Raptors plan to honour Kyle Lowry. According to Rogers Sportsnet on Thursday, the Raptors will retire Lowry’s number seven on January 10, 2027 when they host the Philadelphia 76ers at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario.
Lowry is the second former Raptors player to have his number retired by the organization. On November 2, 2024, the Raptors retired the number 15 of Vince Carter. It should be noted that nobody in the NBA wears number six in honour of the late Bill Russell. The NBA retired Russell’s number throughout the league on August 11, 2022, 12 days after he passed away.
A point guard, Lowry played nine seasons with the Raptors from 2012 to 2021. In 601 games, he averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Lowry also had a field goal percentage of .425, three point percentage of .377, and a free throw percentage of .825. He is the Raptors all-time leader in three point field goals (1518), assists (4277), steals (873), and triple doubles (16).
Also with the Raptors, Lowry was a six-time NBA All-Star. He was honoured in 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20.
Most importantly, Lowry was on the Raptors team that won the 2019 NBA Finals. In being an instrumental part of the only Raptors franchise to win a championship, Lowry averaged 20.2 points per game in 24 postseason games as the Raptors beat the Golden State Warriors in six games in the finals.
