Team Canada has won its first two games of the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Women’s Qualifying Championship in the United States. On Saturday, Canada trounced Jamaica 9-0 in Edinburg, Texas.

It was a memorable game for Jordyn Huitema of Chilliwack, British Columbia. Huitema notched five goals. That was the second most goals scored by a Canadian woman in an international soccer game. Other Canadian goal scorers on Saturday were Janine Beckie of Davidson, Saskatchewan, who notched a hat trick, and Deanne Rose of New Tecumseth, Ontario.

It was also a solid goaltending performance by Stephanie Labbe of Edmonton, Alberta. Labbe made two saves for the shutout as Jamaica had six shots.

Canada won its first game against St. Kitts and Nevis by a score of 11-0 on Wednesday. Canada next plays Mexico on Tuesday with first place in Group B on the line. Mexico beat St. Kitts and Nevis in its last game by a score of 6-0 and also have a record of two wins and zero losses.

Two teams in Group A are undefeated. They are the United States and Costa Rica. The United States trounced Panama 8-0 on Friday in a game where they did not even give up one shot on goal.

The Canadian record for most goals in one game belongs to Silvana Burtini of Williams Lake, British Columbia. Burtini had eight goals in one game in a 21-0 Canada win over Puerto Rico in a Women’s World Cup qualifier in Toronto on August 28, 1998.

The top two teams from the 2020 Olympic Women’s Qualifying Championship qualifies for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Team Canada has won the bronze medal in women’s soccer at the last two Olympic Games.
