Team Canada finished up Group B action at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship on Thursday with wins over Australia and the United States. The Canadian team comprised of Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer, Alberta posted a record of eight wins and one loss, and placed second overall.
Canada’s wins were by scores of 10-2 over Australia, and 8-5 over the United States. In Canada’s win over Australia, the Canadians dominated the third, fourth, and fifth ends. After leading 2-1 after two ends, Canada had three points in the third end, stole two points in the fourth end, and stole three more points in the fifth end. What was most impressive about Canada’s win over Australia was the fact that they stole three points in the fifth end when Australia instituted the power play.
In Canada’s win over the United States, it was a phenomenal performance by Peterman. In the second end, she was able to raise the Canadian stone in the eight foot into the four foot, knock out the American stone in the process, and score two points. Then in the sixth end, Peterman made a shot for the ages. She once again raised her guard which was located along the side of the sheet into play, and knocked out an American stone located on the button, to score three points. Even American curler Matt Hamilton high-fived Peterman!
Canada will now play Norway in one of two qualification games on Friday. Germany will play Sweden in the other. Switzerland won Group A and Scotland won Group B. They are both off to the semifinals.
