
Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario won her first WTA match of 2025 on Wednesday. It came in the first round of the Madrid Open, as Andreescu defeated American McCartney Kessler 6-2, 6-4,
This was vintage Andresscu, as you would not have known based on her exceptional play, that she missed extensive time due to an emergency appendectomy surgery. Andreescu’s only match in 2025 came in Rouen, France, where she lost in the first round to Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.
In Wednesday’s win, Andreescu was the stronger server. She had three aces and one double fault. Kessler had zero aces and two double faults. This was the second straight match where Andreescu had the serving advantage. In Andreescu’s loss to Lamens, Andreescu had six aces and one double fault, and Lamens had two aces and six double faults.
Andreescu also made the most of her opportunities against Kessler. Andreescu broke Kessler four times in four chances. This was also an upset based on the world rankings. Andreescu was ranked 132nd in the world, and Kessler was ranked 43rd.
When healthy, Andreescu is an elite player in women’s tennis. Her greatest accomplishment was winning the 2019 United States Open. Next up for Andreescu in the second round of Madrid is the 10th seed, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, the 2022 Wimbledon champion.
