According to Marley Dickinson of Canadian Running Magazine on Monday, Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, Quebec set the Canadian record in the women’s 200 metres on Friday. She posted a time of 22.36 seconds at the Edwin Moses Classic in Atlanta, Georgia. The previous Canadian record in the women’s 200 metres belonged to Crystal Emmanuel of Scarborough, Ontario, who had a time of 22.5 seconds in winning the Cork City Sports Track meet in Cork, Ireland on July 18, 2017.
This was a very close competition in Atlanta. Tamari Davis of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 22.39 seconds. Kennedy Flannel of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 23.23 seconds. Leduc reached the podium by 0.98 seconds. NaAsha Robinson of the United States finished in fourth place with a time of 23.34 seconds. By posting a time of 22.36 seconds, Leduc set the Olympic standard of 22.57 seconds.
The world record in the women’s 200 metres belongs to Florence Griffith-Joyner of the United States. She posted a time of 21.34 seconds in winning gold at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
Leduc has also set the Canadian record in the women’s 100 metres. She accomplished the feat with a time of 10.96 seconds in the women’s 100 metres at the Louisiana State University Alumni Gold Meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The gold medal in the women’s 200 metres will give Leduc confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
