Team Canada improved to a record of three wins and two losses on Tuesday in Men’s Volleyball Nations League action. In their first game in Canada of the 2024 Men’s Volleyball Nations League season, Canada defeated Cuba three sets to one at Toronto Dominion Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario. Team Canada won the first set 25-21. Cuba evened things up in the second set with a 27-25 win, before Canada won the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-20, 28-26 respectively.
Four Canadians reached double digits in scoring. Outside hitter Eric Loeppky of Steinbach, Manitoba had 22 points (20 attack points and two block points), outside hitter Stephen Maar of Aurora, Ontario had 20 points (16 attack points, two block points and aces), opposite Arthur Szwarc of Toronto, Ontario had 12 points (11 attack points and one block point), and middle blocker Fynnian McCarthy of Lake Country, British Columbia had 11 points (four attack points and a remarkable seven block points).
Canada is actually tied with Cuba for sixth place, and both teams have 10 points. Canada picked up a point in one of their losses because they took Slovenia to five sets. Next up for Canada is Argentina on Thursday. The win over Cuba will give Canada confidence as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
