Women’s hockey history was made on Wednesday as the very first Professional Women’s Hockey League playoff game was played. Toronto was victorious at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario, as they blanked Minnesota 4-0 to take a one game to zero series lead in the best-of-five PWHL semifinal series.
Canadian Olympic gold medalist Kristen Campbell of Brandon, Manitoba made 26 saves for the shutout. She made six saves in the first period, 11 saves in the second period, and nine saves in the third period.
Toronto captain and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, Nova Scotia scored twice, and was one of four Toronto players with a multi-point game. The other Toronto players were two-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario (one goal and one assist for two points), Canadian Olympic gold medalist and defenseman Renata Fast of Hamilton, Ontario (two assists), and Hannah Miller (two assists). The other Toronto goal scorer was Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emma Maltais of Burlington, Ontario. Campbell, Turnbull, Fast and Maltais won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Spooner won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
