
The National Hockey League trade deadline took place on Friday. Here are 10 Canadian forwards who were traded in the last two days before the deadline.
Anthony Beauvillier
The left winger from Sorel-Tracy, Quebec was traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Washington Capitals for a second round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft on Friday. The Capitals are the sixth NHL franchise Beauvillier has played for. He has previously been with the New York Islanders (2016 to 2023), the Vancouver Canucks (2023), the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators (2023 to 2024), and the Penguins (2024 to 2025).
This season in 63 games with Pittsburgh, Beauvillier has 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points. He was a -1 with 14 penalty minutes, one power-play point, one shorthanded point, 120 shots on goal, four faceoff wins, 26 blocked shots, 108 hits, 15 takeaways and 21 giveaways.
Justin Brazeau
The right winger from New Liskeard, Ontario was traded from the Boston Bruins to the Minnesota Wild for a centre Marat Khusnutdinov, centre Jakub Lauko and a sixth round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft on Thursday. He has played the last two seasons with the Bruins.
This season in 57 games with Boston, Brazeau had 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points. He was a -6 with 16 penalty minutes, five power-play points, two game-winning goals, 78 shots on goal, three faceoff wins, 26 blocked shots, 89 hits, 10 takeaways, and 33 giveaways.
Brazeau’s first game-winning goal came on November 3, 2024 in a 2-0 Bruins win over the Seattle Kraken. He scored from Nikita Zadorov and Charlie McAvoy at 3:23 of the first period to put the Bruins up 1-0. Brazeau’s second game-winning goal came on December 28 in a 4-0 Bruins win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. He scored from defensemen Brandon Carlo and Mason Lohrei at 2:29 of the first period to open the scoring.
Dylan Cozens
The centre from Whitehorse, Yukon was traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Ottawa Senators with defenseman Dennis Gilbert and a second round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft on Friday for defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker of Canmore, Alberta and Josh Norris. Cozens has spent the last five seasons with the Sabres.
In 2024-25, Cozens had 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points. He was a -13 with 62 penalty minutes, four power-play points, one game-winning goal, 139 shots on goal, 453 faceoff wins, 37 blocked shots, 148 hits, 13 takeaways, and 56 giveaways. Cozens’s game-wining goal came on November 7 in a 6-1 Sabres win over the New York Rangers. Cozens scored from Zach Benson of Chilliwack, British Columbia and right winger Jack Quinn of Ottawa, Ontario on an all-Canadian goal at 2:45 of the second period to put the Sabres up 2-0 at the time.
Cody Glass
The centre from Winnipeg, Manitoba was traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the New Jersey Devils with forward Jonathan Gruden for right winger Chase Stillman of Peterborough, Ontario, prospect Max Graham, and a third round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. The Devils are Glass’s fourth NHL team. In addition to Pittsburgh, he has played for the Vegas Golden Knights and Nashville Predators.
In 51 games with the Penguins this season, Glass has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. He is a -9 with 12 penalty minutes, two power-play points, one game-winning goal, 78 shots on goal, 178 faceoff wins, 31 blocked shots, 43 hits, 11 takeaways and 22 giveaways.
Glass’s power-play points came in Penguins wins. The first power-play point came in a 3-2 Penguins win over the New York Islanders. Glass set up Evgeni Malkin on a game-winning goal at 6:57 of the third period that put the Penguins up 3-0 at the time. Glass’s second power-play point was also a game-winning goal that came in a 5-2 Penguins win over the Buffalo Sabres on January 17. Glass scored from Philip Tomasino of Mississauga, Ontario and goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic at 11:43 of the second period, which put the Penguins up 3-1 at the time.
Scott Laughton
The centre from Oakville, Ontario was traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Toronto Maple Leafs with two draft picks (fourth round pick in 2025 and a sixth round pick in 2027) for prospect Nikita Grebenkin and a first round pick in 2027 on Friday. Laughton has played the last dozen seasons with Philadelphia. In 61 games this season, he had 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points. Laughton was a -19 with 21 penalty minutes, two shorthanded points, one game-winning goal, 105 shots on goal, 193 faceoff wins, 33 blocked shots, 129 hits, 14 takeaways, and 48 giveaways.
Laughton’s game-winning goal came on December 12 in a 4-1 Flyers win over the Detroit Red Wings. In a game that saw Laughton score four times, his game-winning, shorthanded goal came at 1:31 of the third period to put the Flyers up 2-0. Travis Konecny of London, Ontario, and Travis Sanheim of Elkhorn, Manitoba had the assists on an all-Canadian goal.
Brad Marchand
The left winger from Halifax, Nova Scotia has played the last 16 seasons with the Boston Bruins since 2009. On Friday, the Bruins captain was traded from the Bruins to the Florida Panthers for a second round pick in 2027. Marchand was a two-time All-Star with the Bruins (2017 and 2018), won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011, and led the NHL in shorthanded goals in 2013-14 with five.
In 2024-25, Marchand had 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points. He was a -8 with 62 penalty minutes, 13 power-play points, five game-winning goals, one shorthanded point, 175 shots on goal, five faceoff wins, 27 blocked shots, 66 hits, 19 takeaways, and 71 giveaways. The shorthanded point came on January 14 in a 6-2 Bruins win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Marchand set up Pavel Zacha with three minutes and four seconds left to close out the scoring.
Reilly Smith
Smith, a right winger from Mimico, Ontario, was traded on Thursday to the Vegas Golden Knights from the New York Rangers for Brendan Brisson and a third round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. This is the second time Smith was with Vegas as he was previously there from 2017 to 2023, and won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023. Smith was also with the Dallas Stars from 2011 to 2013, the Boston Bruins from 2013 to 2015, the Florida Panthers from 2015 to 2017, the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023 too 2024, and the New York Rangers in 2024 to 2025.
In 2024-25, Smith had 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 58 games with the Rangers. He was a -1 with 22 penalty minutes, four power-play points, two shorthanded points, two game-winning goals, 89 shots on goal, one faceoff win, 34 blocked shots, 42 hits, 20 takeaways, and 50 giveaways.
Smith’s shorthanded points came in Rangers wins. The first was on December 20, 2024 in a 3-1 Rangers win over the Dallas Stars. Smith scored unassisted to tie the game at one at 10:44 of the first period. The second was on January 16, 2025 in a 5-3 Rangers win over Utah. Smith tied the game at three at the 28 second mark of the third period from defensemen Braden Schneider of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Ryan Lindgren.
Smith’s first game-winning goal of the season came on October 22, 2024 in a 7-2 Rangers win over the Montreal Canadiens. Smith scored unassisted to put the Rangers up 3-0 at 6:40 of the first period. Smith’s second game-winning goal of the season came on December 6, 2024 in a 4-2 Rangers win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Smith put the Rangers up 3-2 from Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider at 9:53 of the third period.
Logan Stankoven
The centre from Kamloops, British Columbia was traded from the Dallas Stars with four draft picks (first round in 2026 and 2028, and third round in 2026 and 2027) to the Carolina Hurricanes for Mikko Rantanen on Friday. Stankoven has played the last two seasons with the Stars. In 2024-25, he has nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points. He was a +2 with six penalty minutes, six power-play points, four game-winning goals, 148 shots on goal, 85 faceoff wins, 24 blocked shots, 42 hits, 15 takeaways, and 41 giveaways.
Brandon Tanev
The left winger from Toronto, Ontario was traded from the Seattle Kraken to the Winnipeg Jets for a second round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. Tanev is returning to the Jets after being there from 2015 to 2019. Tanev was also with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2019 to 2021, and the Kraken since 2021. In 60 games with the Kraken in 2024-25, Tanev has nine goals and eight assists for 17 points. He is a -12 with 10 penalty minutes, 85 shots on goal, seven faceoff wins, 91 blocked shots, 122 hits, 17 takeaways and 40 giveaways.
Joe Veleno
The centre from Montreal, Quebec was traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the Chicago Blackhawks for goaltender Petr Mrazek, and centre Craig Smith. Veleno has played the last five seasons with Detroit. In 2024-25, he had five goals and five assists for 10 points in 56 games. He was a -14 with 13 penalty minutes, 50 shots on goal, 136 faceoff wins, 32 blocked shots, 93 hits, 10 takeaways and 35 giveaways.
