The 2019 Women’s World Cup began on Friday afternoon with an impressive 4-0 win by France over South Korea. Team Canada meanwhile will begin their tournament on Monday against Cameroon from Montpellier. Their following two games are on June 15 against New Zealand in Grenoble and June 20 against the Netherlands in Reims.

Team Canada is in Group E. Just like four years ago in Canada, the Canadian women’s soccer team are in the same pool as New Zealand and the Netherlands. At the last Women’s World Cup, Canada had a scoreless draw with New Zealand at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta and a 1-1 tie with the Netherlands at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec.

In 2019, Canada once again will be led by forward Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia. At 35 years of age, Sinclair is catching up to Abby Wambach of the United States for the most goals all-time by a women’s soccer player in international history. Wambach, who is now retired, is at 184 goals and Sinclair is at 181 goals.

Sinclair is one of seven forwards on Team Canada. She is joined by Janine Beckie of Regina, Saskatchewan, Gabrielle Carle of Quebec City, Quebec, Jordyn Huitema of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Adriana Leon of Mississauga, Ontario, Nichelle Prince of Ajax, Ontario and Jayde Riviere of Markham, Ontario.

There are six midfielders on Team Canada. They are Jessie Fleming of London, Ontario, Julia Grosso of Vancouver, British Columbia, Ashley Lawrence of Toronto, Ontario, Deanne Rose of New Tecumseth, Ontario, and Desiree Scott and Sophie Schmidt of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The seven defenders are Lindsay Agnew of Kingston, Ontario, Kadeisha Buchanan and Rebecca Quinn of Toronto, Ontario, Allysha Chapman of Oshawa, Ontario, Jenna Hellstrom of Sudbury, Ontario, Shannon Woeller of Vancouver, British Columbia and Shelina Zadorsky of London, Ontario. The three Canadian goaltenders are Sabrina D’Angelo of Welland, Ontario, Stephanie Labbe of Edmonton, Alberta and Kailen Sheridan of Whitby, Ontario.
