
Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Sydney Pickrem of Halifax, Nova Scotia won the bronze medal on Friday in the women’s 200 metre breaststroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. For Pickrem, who won the bronze medal in the women’s 4×100 medley relay at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, it was her sixth career medal in the history of the World Aquatics Championships.
Pickrem posted a third place time of 2:22.94. Tes Schouten of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 2:19.81. Kate Douglass of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:20.91. Pickrem earned a medal by 1.5 seconds over Alina Zmushka of the Neutral Independent Athletes, who had a time of 2:24.44.
This was Pickrem’s second medal at the World Aquatics Championships. She previously won silver in the women’s 200 metre medley. Prior to Doha, Pickrem had won four bronze medals at the World Aquatics Championships. They were in the women’s 400 metre individual medley at the 2017 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest, and the 200 metre individual medley, the women’s 4×100 metre medley relay, and the women’s 200 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championship in Gwangju.
Canada has now won 10 medals at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. They have won two gold medals, three silver medals, and five bronze medals. The bronze medal for Pickrem on Friday will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
