
Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario has already won three medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. After winning silver in the women’s 400 metre freestyle on Saturday, and the gold in the women’s 400 metre individual medley on Monday, McIntosh won the gold medal in the women’s 200 metre butterfly on Thursday.
McIntosh finished first by posting an Olympic record and Canadian record time of two minutes, 3.03 seconds. Regan Smith of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:03.84. Yufei Zhang of China won the bronze medal with a time of 2:05.09. McIntosh reached the podium by 4.08 seconds. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and Helena Rosendahl Bach of Denmark shared fourth place with a time of 2:07.11.
Zhang had the previous Olympic record. She posted a time of 2:03.86 when she won the gold medal in the women’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. Another Chinese swimmer has the current world record in the women’s 200 metre butterfly. Liu Zige had a time of 2:01.81 at the 2009 Chinese National Games.
Next up for McIntosh is the women’s 200 metre individual medley. The final is to take place on Saturday. McIntosh is also expected to swim the women’s 4×100 medley relay on Sunday.
Canada now has won eight medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. They have won three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.
