Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec has qualified for the semifinals of the Olympic men’s singles tennis tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In quarterfinal action on Thursday, Auger-Aliassime, the 13th seed, beat the sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Auger-Aliassime had some glorious opportunities to win the second set. He broke Ruud early in the set to take a 3-0 lead. Ruud then broke Auger-Aliassime in the second set to get back on even terms, and then beat the Canadian 10-8 in a very competitive tiebreak. This was the third time that Auger-Aliassime has beaten Ruud in six opportunities. He previously won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the 2019 Miami Open, and then 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth round of the 2024 Madrid Open.
Next up for Auger-Aliassime is four-time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime and Alcaraz have beaten each other three times. Auger-Aliassime’s wins came in the quarterfinals of the 2021 United States Open, the round robin of the 2022 Davis Cup (won by Auger-Aliassime 6-7, 6-4, 6-2), and the semifinals of Basel in 2022 (won by Auger-Aliassime, 6-3, 6-2).
Auger-Aliassime is also in the Olympic mixed doubles bronze medal game with Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa on Friday. Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski will face Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands.
