Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec has won Canada’s 14th medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Sunday, Dubois won a bronze medal in the men’s 500 metre short track speed skating event. For Dubois it was his second medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. He previously won a silver medal in the men’s 1500 metre short track speed skating event on February 9.
Dubois posted a third place time of 40.669 seconds in the Men’s 500 metre A Final. Shaoang Liu of Hungary won the gold medal with a time of 40.338 seconds. Konstantin Ivliev of the Russian Olympic Committee won the silver medal with a time of 40.431 seconds. Dubois reached the podium by 0.2 seconds over Abzal Ashgaliyev of Kazakhstan, who had a fourth place time of 40.869 seconds.
It was fortunate that Dubois reached the A Final. That is because he advanced due to a penalty by Daeheon Hwang of South Korea in the semifinals.
While it was elation for Dubois, it was heartbreak for the Canadian women’s 3000 metre relay team, as they failed to win a medal at the second straight Olympic Winter Games as they finished fourth. The Canadian men are in the men’s 5000 metre relay final on Wednesday (5:44 a.m.) alongside the Russian Olympic Committee, Italy, China and South Korea.
Team Canada has now won one gold medal, five silver medals and nine bronze medals. They are in fifth place in the overall medal standings behind Norway (21 medals), the Russian Olympic Committee (16 medals), Germany (14 medals), and Austria (14 medals). Germany and Austria are ahead of Canada as they have won eight gold medals and four gold medals respectively.
