Sidney Crosby becomes Penguins leader all-time in assists

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia became the Pittsburgh Penguins all-time leader in assists on Sunday. He accomplished the feat in a 3-2 Penguins win over the New York Islanders at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Crosby now has 1034 assists. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Mario Lemieux is second all-time with 1033 assists. Crosby also leads the Penguins all-time in game-winning goals (93), and shots on goal (4185). Crosby’s 1034 assists are 12th all-time in National Hockey League history.

Crosby picked up one assist in the game for his only point. It came at 1:36 of the second period to put the Penguins up 2-0 at the time. Left winger Michael Bunting of Scarborough, Ontario scored the power-play goal on an all-Canadian goal as centre Philip Tomasino of Mississauga, Ontario picked up the other assist. Bunting and Tomasino had multi-point games for the Penguins as they had two points each. Bunting had an assist on the Penguins’s first goal of the game by left winger Anthony Beauvillier of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec at 5:34 of the first period, and Tomasino had a primary assist on the Penguins’s game-winning power-play goal by Evgeni Malkin at 6:57 of the third period which put the Penguins up 3-0 at the time.

So far in 2024-25, Crosby has 10 goals and 30 assists for 40 points in 38 games. He is a -10 with 17 penalty minutes, 12 power-play points, three game-winning goals, 113 shots on goal, 506 faceoff wins, 19 blocked shots, 36 hits, 14 takeaways, and 36 giveaways.

With the win, the Penguins improved to a record of 17 wins, 16 regulation losses and five losses in extra time for 39 points. They are one point back of the Ottawa Senators for a playoff spot.

Crosby won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Lemieux won a gold medal for Canada at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
