Seventeen Canadians switch teams on opening day of CFL free agency

Canadian Football League free agency officially began on Tuesday. Here are 17 Canadians who switched teams.

Joshua Archibald–The defensive lineman from Montreal, Quebec is signing with the Montreal Alouettes. He has previously played three seasons with the British Columbia Lions. Last season, Archibald had 15 defensive tackles, six special team tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles.

Adam Auclair–The linebacker from Saint-Georges, Quebec is signing with the Lions. He has previously played three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks (2021 to 2023), and last season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In 2024, Auclair had 37 defensive tackles, 15 special team tackles, one sack and three interceptions.

Gavin Cobb–The wide receiver from Victoria, British Columbia is signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after two seasons with the Edmonton Elks. In 2024, Cobb had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown.

David Foucault–The offensive lineman from Montreal, Quebec is in his second stint with the Lions after playing there from 2017 to 2019. He also played one season with the Alouettes in 2021, and three seasons with the Elks from 2022 to 2024.

Philippe Gagnon–The offensive lineman from L’Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec is signing with the Roughriders. He has played seven seasons with the Alouettes (2016 to 2018, and 2021 to 2024), and one season with the Ottawa Redblacks (2019). Gagnon won a Grey Cup with the Alouettes in 2023.

Peter Godber–The offensive lineman from Toronto, Ontario is signing with the Reblacks. He has played four seasons with the Lions (2018 to 2022) and the last two seasons with the Roughriders.

Brock Gowanlock–The defensive lineman from Duncan, British Columbia is signing with the Blue Bombers. He has played the last three seasons with the Alouettes, winning a Grey Cup in 2023. Last season, Gowanlock had two special team tackles in three games.

Adrian Greene–The defensive back from Toronto is signing with the Calgary Stampeders. He has played the last three seasons with the Lions. Last season, Greene had 26 defensive tackles, five special team tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble. The two interceptions came in Lions wins. The first came in a 35-20 Lions win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 13, and the second came in a 32-15 win over the Stampeders on October 4.

Josh Hagerty–The defensive back from Regina, Saskatchewan is signing with the Blue Bombers. He has played three seasons with the Toronto Argonauts (winning the Grey Cup in 2022), and one season with the Elks. Last season Hagerty had 10 special team tackles.

Cyrille Hogan-Sadon–The offensive lineman from Quebec City, Quebec is signing with the Alouettes. He has played the last three seasons with the Redblacks.

Rysen John–The wide receiver from Surrey, British Columbia is signing with the Lions after two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. In 2024, he has two catches for 14 yards.

Adam Konar–The linebacker from Vancouver, British Columbia is signing with the Lions. He previously played six seasons with Edmonton. Initially from 2015 to 2018, and again in 2022 and 2023 (winning a Grey Cup with Edmonton in 2015). Konar played two seasons with the Lions (2019 and 2021), and one season with the Stampeders (2024). This past season in Calgary, he had three defensive tackles and seven special team tackles.

Gregor MacKellar–The offensive lineman from Timberlea, Nova Scotia is signing with the Elks. He previously played three seasons with the Argonauts, winning a Grey Cup in 2022 and 2024.

Hergy Mayala–The wide receiver from Montreal is signing with the Argonauts. He has played two seasons with the  Stampeders (2019 and 2021), two seasons with the Alouettes (2022 and 2023), and one season each with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2023) and Elks (2024). Last season, Mayala had 41 catches for 503 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Tyson Middlemost–The wide receiver from Dundas, Ontario is signing with the Elks. He played the last four seasons with the Stampeders. In 2024, Middlemost had three catches for 43 yards.

Fraser Sopik–The linebacker from Toronto, is signing with the Stampeders. This is his second stint in Calgary after being with them from 2021 to 2023. Last season with the Argonauts, Sopik won a Grey Cup, and had 57 defensive tackles, six special team tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. The forced fumble came in a 16-14 Argonauts win over the Blue Bombers on July 27.

Jakub Szott–The offensive lineman from Toronto is signing with the Tiger-Cats. He previously played in Hamilton in 2023. Scott also played one season each with Ottawa (2021), Winnipeg (2023), and Edmonton (2024).
