The Ottawa Senators have found their number one goaltender for 2022-23, and it did not take them long after trading Matt Murray to the Toronto Maple Leafs. On Tuesday, the Senators acquired Cam Talbot of Caledonia, Ontario from the Minnesota Wild for goaltender Filip Gustavsson according to Rogers Sportsnet.

The Senators become Talbot’s sixth National Hockey League team. He previously played for the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, and Minnesota Wild.

Last season in Minnesota, Talbot had a record of 32 wins, 12 regulation losses and four losses in extra time. He had a goals against average of 2.76, save percentage of .911 and three shutouts.

In 396 games, Talbot had 201 wins and 142 losses with a save percentage of .915 and a goals against average of 2.63. One could make the argument that Talbot’s best season came with the Edmonton Oilers in 2016-17. That year he had a NHL high 42 wins, and also led the NHL in minutes played (4294) and saves (1946).

There is no doubt the Senators have a strong core of rising talent. They made progression at the end of last season. In their final 10 games, they had a record of seven wins, two regulation losses and one loss in extra time. Yes, they finished in seventh place in the Atlantic Division, but there are some serious positive signs going forward.
