Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario recorded her first career Professional Women’s Hockey League hat trick on Sunday. She accomplished the feat in a 6-2 Toronto win over New York at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, home of the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League.
Nurse opened the scoring from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emma Maltais of Burlington, Ontario, and Kali Flanagan at 1:05 of the first period. She then put Toronto up 2-0 from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Renata Fast of Hamilton, Ontario, and Hannah Miller of North Vancouver, British Columbia at 12:26 of the first period. Nurse then put Toronto up 5-0 at the 56 second mark from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario.
The other Canadians who scored for Toronto were Rebecca Leslie of Ottawa, Ontario, Alexa Vasko of St. Catharines, Ontario and Spooner. Four Canadians had multi-point games for Toronto. Nurse had three goals for three points, Leslie and Spooner both had one goal and one assist for two points, and Brittany Howard of St. Thomas, Ontario had two assists. Spooner won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Nurse, Maltais, Spooner and Fast won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Toronto moves into a first place tie with Montreal in the PWHL Standings. Both teams have 41 points. Toronto has a record of 11 wins, four wins in extra time and seven losses.
