Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, Nova Scotia has set the Canadian record in the women’s shot put. On Saturday at the Golden Horseshoe Prep Meet in Hamilton, Ontario, Mitton posted a throw of 19.58 metres.

The old Canadian record belonged to Brittany Crew of Mississauga, Ontario. Crew had a throw of 19.28 metres at the Berlin Challenge on September 1, 2019.

What makes Mitton’s throw even more impressive is the fact it is the second farthest throw in women’s shot put in 2022 according to the Canadian Press. The only throw that has been further was by Auriol Dongmo of Portugal, who had a throw of 19.68 metres at the European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal on March 12.

Also in the Hamilton meet, Mitton had a personal best of 19.12 metres with her fifth throw. Her previous personal best was 18.89 metres, which was set at the APU Last Chance Twilight Meet in Azusa, California on May 14, 2021. The women’s shot put world record belongs to Natalya Lisovskaya of the Soviet Union, who had a throw of 22.63 metres at the Moscow Znamenskiy Memorial event on June 7, 1987.

Mitton’s biggest accomplishment to date was winning the gold medal at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy. There she posted a throw of 18.31 metres. The gold medal in Hamilton will give Mitton confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
