Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Mike Soroka of Calgary, Alberta recorded his 35th Major League Baseball quality start on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 7-2 Diamondbacks win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
Soroka threw 93 pitches of which 61 pitches were strikes. In seven innings, he gave up two hits, one earned run, one walk, and one home run, to go along with nine strikeouts. It was a masterful performance and even more impressive when you consider the fact that Coors Field is considered the number one hitter’s ball park in the Major Leagues.
For the season, Soroka has a record of nine wins and five losses with an earned run average of 3.31. During 111 1/3 innings pitched, he has given up 94 hits, 41 earned runs, nine home runs and 27 walks, to go along with 110 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.09.
Soroka now has eight quality starts in his first season with the Diamondbacks. In his career, he also has had 22 quality starts with the Atlanta Braves, one quality start with the Chicago White Sox and four quality starts with the Washington Nationals.
This week, the Diamondbacks’s major focus is staying alive. They are currently at 84 wins and 74 losses, and are four games back of the San Diego Padres, and three games back of the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs for a National League wildcard spot. The Diamondbacks play the Rockies on Thursday before playing the Padres in a three game set in San Diego over the weekend.
