According to Justin Dunk of 3downnation.com on Thursday, the Ottawa Redblacks have signed Canadian kicker Brett Lauther of Truro, Nova Scotia. The Redblacks become Lauther’s third Canadian Football League team as he previously played one season for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013, and seven seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2018 to 2025.
This past season, Lauther made 39 of 54 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of 72.2%. The longest field goal Lauther made was 59 yards. That came in a 29-9 Roughriders win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on August 16. Lauther’s 59 yard field goal was the sixth longest field goal in CFL history ever kicked. Saskatchewan Roughriders kicker Paul McCallum of Vancouver, British Columbia and Sergio Castillo of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers both kicked 63 yard field goals, while Castillo kicked two 60 yard field goals and Dave Ridgway of the Saskatchewan Roughriders also kicked a 60 yard field goal.
Also this past season, Lauther made 31 of 34 converts and scored 148 points. For Lauther’s career, he has made 301 of 370 field goals and 210 of 225 converts for 1113 points.
It is fair to say that Lauther paid his dues in the CFL. He was on the Tiger-Cats practice roster in 2014, on the practice roster for the Roughriders and Toronto Argonauts in 2015, and on the practice roster for the Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos in 2017, but did not play.
In 2025, Lauther was a Grey Cup champion for the first time. Lauther made a 48 yard field goal and three converts as the Roughriders beat the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 in Winnipeg.
