Patrick Marleau retires after 23 NHL seasons

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Patrick Marleau of Swift Current, Saskatchewan announced his retirement from the National Hockey League on Tuesday at the age of 42 according to David Satriano of nhl.com. He played 23 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins. Marleau will be best known for being the NHL all-time leader in games played with 1779 from 1997 to 2021.

Of his 1779 NHL games, 1607 came with the Sharks, 164 with the Maple Leafs and eight with the Penguins. He had 566 goals, 631 assists and 1197 points. Marleau was also a -27 with 527 penalty minutes, 415 power-play points, 21 shorthanded points, five hat tricks and 4333 shots on goal. He is the Sharks’ all-time leader in games played (1607), goals (522), points (1111), even strength goals (342), power-play goals (163), shorthanded goals (17), and shots on goal (3953).

In the playoffs, Marleau had 72 goals and 55 assists for 127 points in 195 games. He was also a -11 with 81 penalty minutes, 24 power-play goals, four shorthanded goals, 16 game-winning goals, and 481 shots on goal.

Marleau was the captain of the Sharks from 2003 to 2009. He also represented the Sharks in three All-Star Games (2004, 2007, and 2009). On the international side, Marleau won the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, the 2003 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Turku, Finland, and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.
