Paralympic silver for Aurelie Rivard and Brent Lakatos

Aurelie Rivard of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Quebec continued to pick up Paralympic medals on Friday. Rivard won Paralympic silver in the women’s 100-metre backstroke in the S10 classification, and Lakatos won Paralympic silver in the men’s 800-metre wheelchair racing in the T53 classification. Rivard now has five medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, and 10 Paralympic medals overall, while Lakatos now has four medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, and 11 Paralympic medals overall.

In the women’s 100-metre backstroke, Rivard had a time of one minute, 8.94 seconds. Bianka Pap of Hungary won the gold medal with a time of one minute, 6.7 seconds. Lisa Kruger of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of one minute, 9.44 seconds. Rivard earned a medal by 1.4 seconds over Jasmine Greenwood of Australia, who had a fourth-place time of one minute, 10.34 seconds.

In the men’s 800-metre wheelchair racing, Lakatos had a time of one minute, 36.32 seconds. Pongsakorn Paeyo of Thailand won the gold medal with a time of one minute, 36.07 seconds. Pierre Fairbank of France won the bronze medal with a time of one minute, 39.67 seconds. Lakatos earned a medal by 3.76 seconds over Shaoqiao Yang of China, who had a fourth-place time of one minute, 40.08 seconds.

Meanwhile, Team Canada is now preparing for the semifinal game in women’s sitting volleyball on Friday. On Wednesday, Canada defeated Japan 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 in their final Pool A game. Heidi Peters of Neerlandia, Alberta, who has one leg, led Canada with 20 points. Canada will now face China in one of two semifinal games. The other will have Brazil versus the United States.
