Ottawa will host the 2023 World Men’s Curling Championship according to CBC News on Friday. Ottawa was initially to host the 2021 World Men’s Curling Championship, but it was moved to Calgary because of the coronavirus pandemic.
This will be the first time that the city of Ottawa will have hosted the World Men’s Curling Championship and the fourth time the event has been hosted by the province of Ontario. London was the host in 1981, Toronto was the host in 1986, and Hamilton was the host in 1996.
In two of these World Men’s Curling Championships, Canada won the gold medal. In 1986, Ed Lukowich of Calgary won gold when Team Canada beat Scotland’s David Smith 4-3 in the final, and in 1996, Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg, Manitoba beat Warwick Smith of Scotland 6-2 in the gold medal game. When Ontario first hosted the World Men’s Curling Championship in Scotland, the gold medal went to Switzerland’s Jurg Tanner, who beat Bud Somerville of the United States 2-1 in the final. Canada’s Kerry Burtnyk of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the bronze medal.
The 2023 Tim Hortons Brier will also be in Ontario with London being the host. The 2023 Women’s World Curling Championship will be in Sandviken, Sweden, and the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be in Kamloops, British Columbia.
