Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario has reached her first WTA Final of 2022. On Saturday, Andreescu will face Caroline Garcia of France in the final of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. The event is significant because it is the last women’s tennis tournament before Wimbledon, which starts on Monday.
Andreescu got a break on Friday as she was able to reach the final without playing a match. That is because Simona Halep of Romania, the fourth seed, withdrew because of a neck injury according to tennisuptodate.com. It will now be interesting to see if the neck injury will impact Halep’s status at Wimbledon, a major where she won in 2019.
At the Bad Homburg Open, Andreescu won three matches to reach the final. She beat 2022 French Open semifinalist Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, Katie Swan of Great Britain 6-4, 6-4 in the second round, and 2022 French Open semifinalist Daria Kasatkina of Russia, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
This is Andreescu’s sixth career WTA Final, and she is looking for her fourth WTA Tournament win. The first three came in her magical 2019 season where she won three significant tennis tournaments–the Indian Wells Open (beat Angelique Kerber of Germany in the final, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4), the Rogers Cup (beat Serena Williams in the final 3-1, retired), and the United States Open (beat Williams again, 6-3, 7-5).
