Nova Scotia women’s provincial curling champions to receive Colleen Jones Memorial Trophy

The Nova Scotia women’s provincial curling champions will now win the Colleen Jones Memorial Trophy according to Devin Heroux of CBC Sports on Sunday. The trophy is in honour of one of the best female curlers Canada has ever seen.

Jones of Halifax, Nova Scotia won a remarkable 14 Nova Scotia provincial women’s curling championships as a skip. She was victorious in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2006.

Six times Jones went on to win the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She was victorious in 1982 in Regina, in 1999 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and in 2001 in Sudbury, Ontario while representing Nova Scotia. Jones then won in 2002 in Brandon, Manitoba, in 2003 in Kitchener, Ontario, and in 2004 in Red Deer, Alberta while representing Team Canada as the defending Scotties Tournament of Hearts champions.

Jones had a remarkable 21 appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and won two Women’s World Curling Championships. She guided Canada to a 5-2 win over Sweden in the gold medal game at the 2001 Women’s World Curling Championship in Lausanne, Switzerland and Canada to an 8-4 win over Norway in the gold medal game of the 2004 Women’s World Curling Championship in Gavle, Sweden. Jones was also inducted into the Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. She passed away of cancer at age 65 on November 25.
