Nathan Rourke shines as Lions clobber the Elks

British Columbia Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke of Victoria, British Columbia had a record-breaking performance on Saturday as the Lions clobbered the Edmonton Elks 46-14 at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. Rourke broke his own record for most passing yards by a Canadian quarterback with 477 according to Brett Honeysett of Victoria Now. He had the previous record of 436 yards which he set on June 25 in a 44-3 Lions win over the Toronto Argonauts.

Rourke completed 34 of 37 passes for 477 yards and five touchdowns. He also had five rushes for 25 yards and another major score. Rourke’s touchdown passes were for two yards to Dominique Rhymes at 6:42 of the first quarter to put the Lions up 6-0, for three yards to Rhymes with three seconds left in the first quarter to put the Lions up 13-7, for 15 yards to Rhymes at 6:08 of the second quarter to put the Lions up 20-7, for 69 yards to Lucky Whitehead with five minutes and 55 seconds left in the first half to put the Lions up 26-7, and for 20 yards to Bryan Burnham with 13 seconds left in the first half to put the Lions up 36-7. Rourke’s touchdown run was for seven yards with three minutes and 43 seconds left in the third quarter, which put the Lions up 45-7.

On the season, Rourke has now completed 187 passes in 230 attempts for 2418 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. On the ground, he has 32 carries for 233 yards and five touchdowns. With the win, the Lions improved to a record of six wins and one loss, and are in second place in the West Division.

In other Canadian Football League action, Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira of Winnipeg, Manitoba recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season on Thursday in a 35-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes. He had a six-yard touchdown run with two minutes and 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter which put the Blue Bombers up 34-14. With the win, the Blue Bombers improved to a record of nine wins and zero losses.

Meanwhile, Andrew Harris of Winnipeg, Manitoba had a five-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34-20 on Saturday. The touchdown came with seven minutes and 15 seconds into the second half, and pulled the Argonauts within three, at 17-14 at the time. With the win, Toronto improved to a record of four wins and three losses, and continue to lead the East Division with eight points.
