
Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec has been named the Professional Women’s Hockey League First Star of the Week for the week from January 27 to February 2. In three games, Poulin had five goals for five points.
Poulin began the week with a hat trick in a 4-1 Victoire win over the Ottawa Charge on January 29. That was followed by a two-goal game on February 2, in a 2-1 Victoitre win over the New York Sirens. Just how valuable was Poulin? Of the nine goals Montreal scored during the week, Poulin scored five of them.
Also during the three games, Poulin was a +5 with 13 shots on goal, five penalty minutes, 37 faceoff wins, one power-play goal, one shootout goal, and one game-winning goal. The power-play goal was from Jennifer Gardiner of Surrey, British Columbia and Cayla Barnes at 10:12 of the second period in the Victoire win over the Charge. At the time, Montreal went up 3-1. The shootout goal came in a 4-3 Montreal win over the Toronto Sceptres on January 30. The game-winning goal came from Abby Boreen and Gardiner at 4:34 of the second period in the Victoire win over the Sirens. At the time, Montreal went up 2-0.
In 14 games this season, Poulin has 10 goals and two assists for 12 points. She is a +7 with 11 penalty minutes, 161 faceoff wins, two power-play goals, one shorthanded goal, four game-winning goals, three shootout goals, and 46 shots on goal. Poulin’s other power-play goal this season came on January 17 in a 4-2 Victoire win over the Minnesota Frost. Poulin scored from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario and Barnes at 5:52 of the second period. At the time, the Victoire took a 3-0 lead. Poulin’s shorthanded goal opened the scoring at 8:02 of the second period and was unassisted in a 2-1 Victoire win over the Charge on December 6.
Poulin won the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and teamed up with Ambrose to win the gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. In the 2024-25 PWHL standings, the Victoire lead with 31 points. They have six more points than the second place Frost. Montreal’s record is eight regulation wins, three wins in extra time, one loss in extra time, and two regulation losses.
