Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario will be the captain of the International Team at the 2024 Presidents Cup in Montreal, Quebec. He will be the first Canadian captain in the history of the Presidents Cup. The event takes place once every two years and features the best golfers in the world from the United States against the best golfers outside of Europe.

This will be the second time the event will have taken place in Canada, as the Royal Montreal Golf Club was also the host venue in 2007. It should also be noted in 2007, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Leaside, Ontario was the honorary chairman, a role for political leaders.

This will be the 15th Presidents Cup all-time. Only once has the International Team been victorious. That was in 1998 in Melbourne, Australia as the International Team clobbered the United States 20.5 to 11.5. The winning international captain was Peter Thomson of Bunswick, Australia. In 2003, the United States and the International Team played to a 17-17 tie in South Africa.

Weir is best known for winning the 2003 Masters. Considered the best moment in the history of men’s golf, Weir is one of three Canadians all-time to win a major. Sandra Post of Oakville, Ontario won the 1968 LPGA Championship, and Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario won the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship and the 2022 Evian Masters.
