Canada has won the 2022 Davis Cup. In one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history, Canada defeated Australia two matches to none in Sunday’s final in Malaga, Spain.

The Canadian victories in the final were from Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario, and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec. Shapovalov defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis of Greece, 6-2, 6-4. Then Auger-Aliassime defeated Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 6-4.

Shapovalov got off to a fantastic start on Sunday after struggling in his prior two singles matches against Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany and Lorenzo Sonego of Italy. He won his first four games of the match against Kokkinakis en route to the straight sets win.

Even though Kokkinakis is 94th in the world, he was a very formidable opponent with a solid resume. It includes winning the 2022 Australian Open in men’s doubles alongside fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Adelaide International Tennis Tournament, and surprise wins over Canadian Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario in the first round of Queen’s in 2017, and over tennis icon Roger Federer of Switzerland in the second round of Miami in 2018.

This was Auger-Aliassime’s second win over De Minaur in 2022. He previously won in the second round of the Cincinnati Open, leading up to the United States Open, 6-3, 6-2.
