Mike Smith notches fifth career playoff shutout

Mike Smith of Kingston, Ontario notched his fifth career National Hockey League postseason shutout on Wednesday. The Edmonton Oilers netminder made 30 saves in a 6-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings in game two of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Smith made 14 saves in the first period, nine saves in the second period, and seven saves in the third period. His previous four NHL playoff shutouts came in a 4-0 Phoenix Coyotes win over the Chicago Blackhawks on April 23, 2012 in game six of the Western Conference quarterfinals, in a 1-0 Arizona Coyotes win over the Nashville Predators on May 4, 2012 in game four of the Western Conference semifinals, in a 2-0 Arizona Coyotes win over the Los Angeles Kings on May 20, 2012 in game four of the Western Conference Finals, and in a 4-0 Calgary Flames win over the Colorado Avalanche on April 11, 2019 in game one of the 2019 Western Conference quarterfinals.

In Wednesday’s win, the Oilers tied the series at one game apiece after Smith made an awful mistake in giving the puck away to the Kings on Monday night in a 4-3 Los Angeles win. Three Canadians scored for the Oilers in game two. Evander Kane of North Vancouver, British Columbia scored twice, while Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario, and Ryan McLeod of Mississauga, Ontario, each scored once. Game three of the series now shifts to Los Angeles on Friday.
