Canadian Olympic gold medalist Maude Charron of Sainte-Luce, Quebec won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Weighting Championships in Bogota, Colombia on Thursday. The third place finish came in the women’s 59 kilogram division.
Charron, who won the gold medal in the women’s 64 kilogram division at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, lifted a total of 231 kilograms in Bogota this past week. Yenny Alvarez of Colombia won the gold medal by lifting 234 kilograms. Hsing-chun Kuo of Chinese Taipei won the silver medal with 232 kilograms. Charron earned a podium spot by one kilogram as Shifang Luo of China finished in fourth place by lifting 230 kilograms.
In the snatch portion of the event, Charron and Xiaomin Luo lifted the most at 103 kilograms each. Then in the clean and jerk, Charron lifted the fourth highest amount of 128 kilograms. Alvarez lifted the most at 133 kilograms. Kuo was second with 130 kilograms, and Shifang Luo was third with 129 kilograms.
This was Charron’s second medal in the history of the World Weightlifting Championships. The first was a silver medal in Anaheim, California at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships. The bronze medal for Charron will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. It should be noted that there is no longer a 64 kilogram weight class for the women, and Charron will be competing in the 59 kilogram class, the same weight class she won a bronze medal in at the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships in Bogota.
