The Miami Marlins have signed starting pitcher Cal Quantrill of Port Hope, Ontario to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million according to the Associated Press on Wednesday. The Marlins will be hoping that Quantrill bounces back this season after leading the National League with 69 walks in 2024 while with the Colorado Rockies.

The Marlins are Quantrill’s fourth Major League Baseball team. He previously played two seasons with the San Diego Padres (2019 and 2020), four seasons with Cleveland (2020 to 2023), and last season with the Rockies.

In 2024, Quantrill had a record of eight wins and 11 losses with an earned run average of 4.98. During 148 1/3 innings pitched and 29 games, he gave up 156 hits, 82 earned runs, 23 home runs, and the aforementioned 69 walks, to go along with 110 strikeouts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.52.

Last season Quantrill was much better in the first half, where he had an earned run average of 4.13, compared to the second half where he was at 6.85. Quantrill had 12 quality starts, but none after July 24.

Cal Quantrill is the son of former MLB pitcher Paul Quantrill of London, Ontario. Paul pitched 14 MLB seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins from 1992 to 2005, and was an American League All-Star with the Blue Jays in 2001.
