Laurent Dubreuil wins gold in men’s 500m speed skating World Cup in Calgary

Canadian Olympic silver medalist Laurent Dubreuil of Quebec City, Quebec won the gold medal in the men’s 500 metres World Cup speed skating event in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday. It was one of two medals won by Dubreuil, as he also won a silver medal in the men’s 1000 metres on Sunday. Team Canada won two gold medals at the World Cup event in Calgary this past weekend as the Canadian Olympic gold medalists of Isabelle Weidemann and Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, Ontario, and Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Quebec won the gold medal in the women’s team pursuit. Weidemann, Blondin and Maltais won the gold medal in the women’s team pursuit, while Dubreuil won the silver medal in the men’s 1000 metres at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

On Saturday in the men’s 500 metres, Dubreuil had a winning time of 34.01 seconds. Tatsuya Shinhama of Japan won the silver medal with 34.18 seconds. Jun-Ho Kim of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 34.19 seconds. Dubreuil reached the podium by 0.19 seconds over Yuma Murakami of Japan, who finished in fourth place with a time of 34.20 seconds. In the men’s 500 metre World Cup standings, Dubreuil leads with 174 points. Murakami is in second with 143 points.

On Sunday, in the men’s 1000 metres, Dubreuil was in second place with a time of 1:07.30. He was in fact one of two Canadians on the podium as Antoine Gelinas-Beaulieu of Sherbrooke, Quebec won the bronze medal with a time of 1:07.32. Dubreuil reached the podium by 0.04 seconds and Gelinas-Beaulieu reached the podium by 0.02 seconds over Jordan Stolz of the United States, who had a time of 1:07.34. Hein Otterspeer of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 1:07.28. In the men’s 1000 metre World Cup standings, Dubreuil leads with 139 points. Otterspeer is in second with 132 points.

On Saturday in the women’s team pursuit, Blondin, Weidemann and Maltais had a time of 2:54.49. Japan won the silver medal with a time of 2:57.67. The United States won bronze with a time of 2:57.95. Canada reached the podium by 6.01 seconds over the Netherlands which had a fourth place time of 3:00.50. In the World Cup women’s team pursuit standings, Canada leads with 120 points. Japan is second with 102 points.

On Friday, in the men’s team pursuit, the Canadian team of Gelinas-Beaulieu, Connor Howe of Canmore, Alberta, and Hayden Mayeur of Toronto, Ontario won the silver medal with a time of 3:36.48. The United States won gold with a time of 3:35.92. Norway won bronze with a time of 3:39.88. Canada reached the podium by 5.23 seconds over Italy, which had a fourth place time of 3:41.70. Canada is now in third place in the World Cup men’s team pursuit standings with 94 points. The United States lead with 120 points.
