Joshua Liendo of Toronto, Ontario won the silver medal on Saturday in the men’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. For Liendo, it was his fourth medal in the history of the World Aquatics Championships.
Liendo had a second place time of 50.34 seconds on Saturday, which turned out to be a Canadian national record. Maxime Grousset of France won the gold medal with a time of 50.14 seconds. Dare Rose of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 50.46 seconds. Liendo reached the podium by 0.47 seconds. Matt Temple of Australia finished in fourth place with a time of 50.81 seconds. Liendo held the previous Canadian record of 50.36 seconds, which was set at the Canadian National Swimming Trials in Toronto on March 29, 2023. He also has the Canadian record in the men’s 50 metre freestyle, with a time of 21.61 seconds at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Liendo won three medals at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He won silver in the 4×100 metre mixed freestyle relay, and bronze medals in the men’s 100 metre freestyle and men’s 100 metre butterfly.
While there is historic depth in the water in Canadian women’s swimming at the moment, Liendo is clearly the leader of the men’s program. He will be a medal contender for Canada at the 2024 Olympic Winter Games in Paris.
