Jesper Sorensen named Whitecaps new head coach

The Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer have named Jesper Sorensen of Aarhus, Denmark as their new head coach. Sorensen takes over from Vanni Sartini of Florence, Italy, who was fired on November 25. In three seasons coaching the Whitecaps, Sartini had a respectable record of 59 wins, 50 losses and 38 draws.

The Whitecaps are coming off a productive season on the pitch. They clobbered the Portland Timbers 5-0 in the Wild Card round of the MLS playoffs, before losing two games to one in a best of three series to LAFC.

Sorensen has eight years of experience coaching professional soccer in his home country of Denmark. He was with Silkeborg in 2013 and 2014, Fredericia from 2015 to 2018, and Brondby from 2023 to 2024. Sorensen was also an assistant coach for AGF (Aarhus Gymnastikforening) from 2009 to 2013, and again in 2015. He was also an assistant coach for Brondby from 2021 to 2023, and was the Denmark u21 coach from 2021 to 2023.

As a player, Sorensen played 30 international games for Denmark at the under 17, under 19 and under 21 levels. He also had nine goals in 310 games playing professional soccer as a midfielder in Denmark. The teams he played with were Aarhus Gymnastikforening, FC Copenhagen, and Akademisk Boldklub Gladsaxe. The Whitecaps begin their 2025 MLS season in Portland on February 23.
