Jason Glass of High River, Alberta won the 2024 Rangeland Derby at the Calgary Stampede on Sunday. Glass had a winning time of 1:11.55 to win his second Calgary Stampede chuckwagon racing championship. The first came in 2013.
Layne MacGillivray of Halkirk, Alberta finished in second place with a time of 1:13.46. Chanse Vigen of Calgary, Alberta finished in third place with a time of 1:14.23. It was a tough Dash for Cash final for Vigen as he had a seven second barrel penalty. Vigen was penalized for knocking a barrel down before the race even started.
This was a memorable Calgary Stampede for Glass. According to Remy Greer of the Western Wheel on Thursday, Glass became the first chuckwagon racer ever to go under 70 seconds at the Rangeland Derby. He posted a time of 1:09.45 in setting the Calgary Stampede record.
According to Laurence Heinen of the Calgary Herald, Glass is a fourth generation multi-winner of the Rangeland Derby. Jason Glass’s great grandfather Tom Lauder of Calgary won in 1924, 1926 and 1927. Jason’s grandfather Ron Glass of High River won four Calgary Stampede titles in 1941, 1946, 1947 and 1949. Jason’s father Tom Glass won four more Calgary Stampede titles in 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1994. Both Tom and Ron Glass are members of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Ron was inducted in 2000 and Tom was inducted in 2013, the first year Jason won the Rangeland Derby.
