Isabelle Weidemann of Ottawa, Ontario has won her second medal for Canada in women’s speed skating at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Thursday, Weidemann won the silver medal in the women’s 5000 metres. She previously won a bronze medal in the women’s 3000 metres on Saturday.
Weidemann posted a second place time of 6:48.18. Irene Schouten of the Netherlands collected her second Olympic record at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing with a gold medal winning time of 6:43.51. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with a time of 6:50.09. Weidemann earned a medal by 3.58 seconds over fourth place finisher Francesca Lollobrigida of Italy, who had a time of 6:51.76.
This is a marvelous Canadian long track speed skating team with many opportunities to come away with Olympic hardware. In fact, I have projected Team Canada to come away with seven medals. Weidemann still has a legitimate chance to win a third Olympic medal in the women’s team pursuit where Canada is a gold medal contender. That event will start on February 12, with medals being awarded on February 15.
Canada now has won 12 medals, which is second overall, only behind Austria. They have won one gold medal, four silver medals and seven bronze medals.
