Team Canada has won a bronze medal in mixed aerials at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. The Canadian team comprised of Marion Thenault of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Lewis Irving of Quebec City, Quebec, and Miha Fontaine of Magog, Quebec. This was the first time ever that mixed aerials was at the Olympic Winter Games.
Thenault, Irving and Fontaine posted a combined score of 290.98 points. The United States won the gold medal with a score of 338.34 points. China won the silver medal with a score of 324.22 points. Canada reached the podium by 14.97 points. Switzerland finished in fourth place with a score of 276.01 points. In the final, Thenault had a score of 62.74 points. Irving had a score of 111.76 points and Fontaine had a score of 116.48 points.
Team Canada qualified for the final by finishing in third place in qualifications. It was a significant surprise that the Russian Olympic Committee and Belarus did not qualify for the final.
Miha Fontaine is the son of Nicolas Fontaine, who won the gold medal for Canada in men’s aerials at the 1997 World Freestyle Skiing Championships in Nagano, Japan. However despite being a world champion, Nicolas Fontaine never won an Olympic medal.
The medal in mixed aerials is Canada’s 11th medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. They have won one gold medal, three silver medals and seven bronze medals.
