Gabriel Diallo of Montreal, Quebec is in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Madrid Masters. On Wednesday in the fourth round, Diallo defeated the 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. The fact that Diallo is in the final eight of a Masters 1000 Series event is significant for two reasons. The first is the fact that he is ranked 78th in the world, and the second is the fact that Diallo was a lucky loser.
One key statistic in the match was double faults. Diallo only had two, while Dimitrov had six. Diallo won an exciting second set tiebreak 9-7, and had a first serve percentage of 77% compared to 59% for Dimitrov. The 33-year-old Bulgarian was a three-time grand slam semifinalist, as he got to the final four of the 2014 Wimbledon, 2017 Australian Open and the 2019 United States Open.
Next up for Diallo is the 10th seed, and 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy. They have beaten each other once in the past. Diallo beat Musetti 7-5, 6-4 in 2023 Davis Cup action, and Musetti beat Diallo 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of Hong Kong on New Year’s Day.
The other semifinalists have been determined. The three other quarterfinal winners are Jack Draper of Great Britain, Casper Ruud of Norway, and Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina.
