New York Rangers goaltender Dylan Garand of Victoria, British Columbia recorded his first career National Hockey League shutout on Friday. He accomplished the feat in a 2-0 Rangers win over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

In the Rangers’s Friday win, Garand made 22 saves for the shutout. He made 11 saves in the first period, nine saves in the second period and two saves in the third period. Marco Kasper led the Red Wings with four shots on goal.

Rangers defenseman Sean Durzi of Mississauga, Ontario scored the game-winning goal. It came at 5:12 of the first period from Gabriel Perreault of Sherbrooke, Quebec and William Cuylle of Toronto, Ontario. The all-Canadian goal came on the power-play.

This was Garand’s third career NHL win. In 2025-26, he made 27 saves in a 6-1 Rangers win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 27, 2026, and then 29 saves in a 4-2 Rangers win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 15, 2026.

Garand is the first Canadian goaltender to record a shutout in the National Hockey League this season. He was the fifth goalie to record a shutout this season. Garand followed Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins (in a 3-0 Bruins win over the Rangers on September 29), Jacob Markstrom of the Florida Panthers (in a 1-0 Panthers win over the Carolina Hurricanes on September 29), Arturs Silovs of the Pittsburgh Penguins (in a 7-0 Penguins win over the Philadelphia Flyers on September 30), and Karel Vejmelka of the Utah Mammoth (in a 6-0 Mammoth win over the Blackhawks on October 1).

This was the Rangers’s second win of the season. They defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The only other team to win two games this season are the Boston Bruins.
